The Teacher Retirement System (TRS) Board of Trustees met for their first full board meeting in the agency’s new Austin headquarters Thursday and Friday, July 17-18, 2025.

The meeting began with a resolution recognizing the service of retiring trustee James Dick Nance. As TRS Executive Director Brian Guthrie put it, Trustee Nance served eight years of a six-year term with distinction. A retired Texas public school coach, Nance’s perspective was always meaningful and will be missed.

In addition to receiving an update on the recently concluded 89th legislative session and considering the agency’s annual budget, TRS announced the following four TRS-Care updates:

  • No premium increases for 2026 TRS-Care plans
  • TRS-Care Dental and TRS-Care Vision enrollment dates
  • TRS-Care Health Education Fairs coming soon
  • New Member Rewards program for TRS-Care Standard

No Premium Increases for 2026

TRS-Care premiums for all plans will remain the same for the 2026 plan year. This means retiree members can continue their coverage without a change in the monthly premium.

TRS-Care Standard deductibles will slightly increase on Jan. 1 to align with IRS guidelines that allow participants to use a health savings account with the plan.

Remember that all deductible and maximum out-of-pocket expenses for all TRS-Care health plans will reset on Jan. 1, 2026.

Dental and Vision Enrollment Period: Oct. 1 – Dec. 8

This year’s open enrollment period for dental and vision coverage will run from Oct. 1 through Dec. 8. For members who have already enrolled, no action is required. Their coverage will automatically renew on Jan. 1, with no change in premiums.

For members who didn’t enroll last year and want to enroll for 2026, TRS is introducing a new online enrollment system to make the process easier and more convenient for new enrollees. According to TRS, it takes just two clicks to start enrolling.

Qualified members can enroll online through MyTRS starting Oct. 1. If a member doesn't have a MyTRS account yet, creating one ahead of the enrollment period will create an even easier experience. You can learn how to register at Register for MyTRS Portal.

This open enrollment period is also the time when already enrolled members may add dependents.

TRS-Care Health Education Fairs Coming Soon

According to TRS, their annual TRS-Care Health Education Fairs are just around the corner. These events are a great opportunity to learn more about benefits and connect with TRS representatives.
Those interested can sign up for a location near you!

If you’re unable to attend in person, you can sign up for a webinar to get a refresher on your plan benefits. Event dates can be found at TRS Health Events.

Member Rewards for TRS-Care Standard

TRS-Care Standard participants will now have access to Member Rewards. Starting on Sept. 1, participants can earn up to $599 annually when they see high-quality, low-cost providers. More information on this program is coming soon.
