BREAKING: Texas House committees announced for 87th Legislature

Members of the Texas House of Representatives have been awaiting an announcement from House Speaker Dade Phelan (R-Beaumont) on this session's committee assignments. The announcements were made Thursday afternoon, including some high-profile surprises and a clear sign of the new speaker's commitment to bipartisan leadership.
Rep. Harold Dutton (D-Houston) is taking over as chair of of the House Public Education Committee. The high-profile committee had been chaired since the 2017 legislative session by Rep. Dan Huberty (R-Kingwood), who will remain on the committee. Rep. J.M. Lozano (R-Kingsville), a newcomer to the committee, becomes the vice chair. The committee also includes new members Terry Meza (D-Irving) and Brad Buckley (R-Salado). The full committee composition is as follows:
