Candidate Survey Responses

HAS NOT RESPONDED TO THE 2024 CANDIDATE SURVEY.

RESPONSES TO THE 2020 ATPE CANDIDATE SURVEY:

1. If elected, what do you believe your primary role and responsibility as a state board member should be?

Investigating and, as needed, updating: textbooks, curriculum and Texas Permanent School Fund management.

2. In your opinion, what is the most pressing issue facing public education in Texas?

Sufficient state funding to assure all TX schools (school districts) have the means to provide the best possible education to all of the students in Texas; latest, most accurate information in texts and curriculum materials; efficient fund management/distribution.

3. What role should educators and educator groups such as ATPE play in policy decisions made by the State Board of Education (SBOE)?

Make your perspective known; communicate. Be available should information, discussion, be sought from said individuals and groups.

4. How much weight should the SBOE give to educators' input when it comes to setting curriculum standards (known as the Texas Essential Knowledge and Skills or "TEKS") and evaluating instructional materials?

Quite a bit.

5. Do you believe our state's public education system, including current regulations on testing and accountability, graduation requirements, and curriculum standards, enables students to receive a well-rounded education throughout all grade levels? Would you recommend any changes?

Texas schools do a commendable job with what they have, but there is a need to constantly audit means and methods such that deficiencies might be identified and corrected efficiently. Closer study of what is being done, being considered and in flux need be done before changes are recommended.

6. What role, if any, should charter schools have in the Texas public education system?

Public money is for public schools only. Charters can become private schools if they would like to continue their efforts in education in Texas, without public funds of any kind.

7. What role should the SBOE play in overseeing charter schools, such as approving or denying new charter applications and expansions of existing charters?

SBOE should roll charter schools off public funding; private schools need no public funds... No public oversite.

8. Do you believe the SBOE should continue to have the authority to review and potentially veto any rule actions taken by the State Board for Educator Certification (SBEC)?

The SBOE should retain some form of input, but current practice needs closer review before opining.
